Amendment to the Law on Citizenship 2023

It is no longer possible to obtain citizenship through the purchase of a share of a real estate object!

That is, if earlier two foreigners could buy an apartment, become owners and both obtain citizenship, now it is prohibited. Each property can have only one owner and only he can obtain Turkish citizenship.

  • If several real estate objects are purchased to obtain citizenship, then there must be one purchase and sale agreement. That is, if two apartments are purchased worth 200 thousand dollars each, then this should be done at the same time, while a single contract is drawn up, which will become the basis for obtaining citizenship.
  • You cannot obtain citizenship twice for one object. That is, a foreigner who has bought a real estate object and obtained citizenship can later sell this object. But if a foreigner buys this object, then it will no longer be possible to obtain citizenship for it.
  • If, in order to obtain citizenship, secondary real estate is purchased, then before that it must be owned by a Turkish citizen for at least three years. If the property has been owned for less than three years, it is impossible to obtain citizenship on it. Also, the above rule applies: if citizenship has already been issued for this property, then it will not be possible for a foreigner to re-issue it.
  • If the property is bought with a mortgage, then the amount that remains after deducting the loan amount must be at least 400 thousand dollars. At the same time, if the buyer pays money after issuing a certificate for the purchase of currency, then payments must be in Turkish lira. If the transaction is carried out before the issuance of a certificate of purchase of currency, then the transfer must be made in a foreign currency.
